How to navigate heatstroke with chickens!

As summer temperatures rise, monitoring your flock for signs of heat stress or heatstroke becomes critical for their survival. Extreme heat causes severe physical discomfort for chickens and can quickly lead to deformed eggshells, a drastic drop in egg production, permanent organ damage, and even death. Because chickens cannot sweat, you must watch closely for warning signs like persistent open-mouth panting, rapid breathing, diarrhoea, extreme lethargy, or holding their wings far away from their bodies.
To protect them, always provide abundant fresh, cool water placed strictly in shaded areas, and mix in flock-safe electrolytes to help them maintain proper hydration. Ensuring their enclosure is spacious and highly ventilated is equally important, as it maximises airflow and prevents overcrowding, which only traps more ambient heat.
If you choose to leave coop doors or windows open overnight for extra breezes, always secure those openings with heavy-duty mesh or hardware cloth rather than flimsy chicken wire to keep predators out. Finally, you can give your chickens instant relief by offering bite-sized frozen fruits and vegetables like watermelon, bananas, strawberries, peas, or broccoli. These refreshing snacks can be tossed directly onto the cool ground or frozen inside ice moulds to create a fun, interactive game that keeps your flock hydrated, entertained, and safe all summer long.
Let's make summer enjoyable for all!
